A huge huge WELL DONE and GOOD PERSEVERENCE to everyone who completed the very tricky and often awkward conditions for the 35 miles Pier To Pier last Saturday
Starting at Brighton Pier, a relatively late start of 07:30am ( for BTRS that’s late!) mountain biking North and mostly uphill for 4 miles, to reach Ditchling Beacon, where the South Downs Way to Eastbourne was the road to freedom
Jody East, Chris Agnew, Steve MacMenamin, Jean Fish, Amy Jordan, Tess Agnew, Simon Barton, Paul Wilman, Anita Ashgar, Colin Horn, Fabrice Cesaro, Rachel Brunning, Keith Jackson, Sally Killick, I hope you will look back on the day with a smile, as I do
The cross country ride was designed to take around 4 to 5 hours, with SAG stops, but eventually saw everyone across the finish line at Eastbourne Pier around 9 hours after starting. With weekends being obviously precious for family time, I’m very conscious that partners and family members were waiting, and that plans may have been missed ! I take full responsibility for this time lapse ! Some of the riders, in particular Paul Wilman, Steve MacMenamin, and Colin Horn, took a custodial role, patiently looking after less experienced mountain bikers throughout the day, and I can only say a HUGE THANKYOU !
Challenging conditions, greasy, muddy, misty, hilly, we’re all but obliterated by comaraderie, hard work, hot coffee, and a true cycling bond. THANKYOU each and every athlete, for bringing your own special something to the Pier-to-Pier Peleton.
I hope you all enjoyed the day ( I will improve any loose ends for the next one, including overall timing ) I look forward to the next one, where perhaps the SAG stops will offer a more interesting beverage at each checkpoint
best, as always
